Christine Wuenschel's current drawings
are a series of cropped views of the artist's body that
she says, "little by little, gradually reveal me"
to the viewer. Though reminiscent of Jenny Saville's earlier
paintings in portraying large, stacked, expanses of flesh,
and comparable to Bailey
Doogan's drawings for their intense focus on the ripples
and sags of the body that are glared over by conventional
portraiture, Wuenschel's work is radically different. These
drawings are transgressively personal and unknowably new.
They inspire an exhilaration that skips past judgment, making
you drop your baggage at her studio door.
